Today my family visited a local orchard and loaded up on gala apples and yellow peaches. We were on our way to Skyline Drive and passed a sign for Jenkins Orchards. My dad decided to make the turn and we drove down the long drive. After a couple miles, we reached the farm stand, inside they had a variety of apples, peaches and pears for sale. (along with a small selection of melons, corn and peppers).
This orchard does not offer “pick your own” fruit, they have the different fruit varieties separated into baskets for purchasing. The back wall is loaded with jams, dressings, sauces and local honey. I’ve said before that fall is my favorite season and seeing all the apples and pears has me nostalgic for the days with crisp air and baking yummy treats like apple cake.
I spoke with the woman running the store and she told me, that she married into the family and they have been on the land since the 1950’s. I find farm living so appealing, although it is very hard work, it must be very gratifying to watch the land you live on provide your family and community with fresh fruits and vegetables. There really is something to be said about being self-sufficient. One day if I ever own a generous amount of land I would love to have a substantial garden and orchard.
Throughout the growing season Jenkins offers peaches, apples, plums, pears, nectarines and tomatoes. Next time I head out on a country drive, I will be sure to drop by again to load up on fresh seasonal goodies.

Yeah, but you have the beautiful coast and Disneyland at least. 🙂
